night cars

The series began one night with a classic Dodge Dart parked near the lab where I was dropping off film. Struck by the lines, light, shapes and shadows before me (see Night Cars #1), I created a composition on the square ground glass  – upside down and reversed – and the project was born.

I became a hunter, scouting vehicles in the daytime and returning to photograph them at night, some toned amber by sodium-vapor streetlights, some accented red and green by traffic lights, some sidelit by the passing headlights of other cars.

One of the archetypal forms of Los Angeles, these vintage cars slumber at the side of the road, worn, weathered, speaking truth to us from another era, taking on a different character in the dark.

Photographed entirely at night on medium-format film. Exposures range from two to 40 minutes.
