biography
Ethan Pines is an award-winning fine-art, commercial and editorial photographer who grew up on a small ranch in Los Angeles where it was dangerous to be a kid (playing with gunpowder, getting shot by BB guns) and often fatal to be a pet (dogs attacking goats, horses kicking dogs). After heading east for college (U. Penn) and graduate school (Columbia), he returned to Los Angeles in 1999 to pursue photography.
Ethan’s work in the art world includes numerous group exhibitions and a solo show at New Theme gallery in Los Angeles. In 2016 the Smithsonian chose his portrait of Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang for a permanent installation. He’s been honored many times by the Communication Arts Photo Annual, the Graphis Photography Annual, the American Photography Annual, the International Photography Awards and American Photo’s Images of the Year
His commercial work has spanned ad campaigns for Genentech, Dolby, SolarCity, Ubisoft, Universal Studios, Casio and others. Editorial clients include Forbes (13 years and counting), Wired, The New York Times, Los Angeles Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. He has captured some of the most iconic portraits of our time, including Elon Musk, Mookie Betts, Dana White, Sundar Pichai, Marc Andreesen, Shaquille O’Neal, Jackie Chan, Kesha and countless others. He also created the infamous photo of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes holding a small blood vial.
An avid hiker, skier and Nitrox-certified scuba diver, Ethan lives in Topanga Canyon with owls, deer, spiders, his family and a bunch of weeds.
