Rhino hooves crunching the salt-pan gravel. Elephants ripping bark from trees. Otherworldly silence broken only by the sounds of slow chewing and heavy exhales. A pungent livestock smell drifting on the slight breeze. A cheetah striding by, warily watching you. A giraffe approaching a watering hole with impossible patience – a few steps, looking around, a few more cautious steps, over and over until, at the water’s edge, it plants its front legs wide and lowers its long neck to drink. Scores of animals standing distant from a watering hole because there are lions lounging in the sun and occasionally taking a sip. This is the true experience of Namibia wildlife.
Namibia is an extraordinary, surreal place. Much of the landscape is arid and stark, sparsely vegetated with stunted shrubs and trees, flat and nearly colorless. It is in this context that I determined to approach this project with a vivid use of color, working with hues and techniques to imbue these moments with the life and love that they possess in my memory.
